Presidents Day in 2019 falls on Monday, Feb. 18. It is a state and federal holiday observed on the third Monday of February each year.
Though the official name of the holiday is Washington’s Birthday, the day has been widely known as Presidents Day since the mid-1980s.
It was one of several holidays moved to a Monday as part of Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1971, put in place to give federal employees more three-day weekends. Presidents Day can be fall anywhere between Feb. 15 and Feb, 21.
George Washington’s actual birthday is Feb. 22.
Eleven states don’t observe Presidents Day in February – Delaware, Georgia, Iowa, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, North Carolina, New Mexico, Rhode Island and Wisconsin.
Is mail delivered on Presidents Day?
There is no mail delivery on Monday. It’s one of 10 non-Sundays each year that the U.S. Postal Service doesn’t deliver mail. The next is Memorial Day on May 27.
Are stock markets open on Presidents Day?
No, the two major stock markets – the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ are not open for trading on Monday, Feb. 18.

Are UPS and FedEx packages delivered on Presidents Day?
While post offices are closed, Presidents Day is a regular day of business for the United Parcel Service as it is not one of the seven holidays UPS observes this year.
All FedEx services except for FedEx Express and FedEx Smart Post will operate as normal. Those two will have a modified schedule.
What is the New Jersey Transit bus and train schedule for Presidents Day?
Trains will run on a weekend/major holiday schedule with extra peak period trains on the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast, Raritan Valley, Morris & Essex/Gladstone, Montclair-Boonton and Port Jervis lines.
Bus service on Presidents Day varies by route. Some will operate on a weekday schedule while other routes will follow a Saturday schedule. Still others will follow a holiday schedule or a “special holiday” schedule. A few routes will not run at at all.
Trains will run on a modified schedule.
What about PATH and SEPTA?
PATH trains will follow a Saturday schedule on Presidents Day. There will also be extra service on both the Journal Square-33 Street (via Hoboken) and Newark-World Trade Center lines from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
SEPTA will run a modified weekday schedule for city transit routes.
Are malls and supermarkets open on Presidents Day?
Of course. It’ll be business as usual at the state’s major shopping hours with normal hours. Supermarkets will also be open as usual.
Most will be open until 9:30 p.m.
Are schools open on Presidents Day?
The majority of public schools across the state are closed for the holiday. Some school districts, however, use the day as a makeup for snow days and may be in session.
Many private and religious institutions also give students the day off, though some might opt to remain open.
Are government offices open on Presidents Day?
Nope. Local, county and state employees have the day off.
The next holiday observed by state agencies will be Good Friday on April 19, 2019.
Can I renew my license or get my car inspected on Presidents Day?
No. All New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission offices are closed Monday in observance of the holiday.
